Where were your foundations forged?

Now that is a deliberate word choice because at some point in our lives, we have been forged, shaped by strong pressure, or by heating or hammering.

As a young man I wanted to be a black smith but horses were not abundant enough for farriers to be taking on apprentices.

Life found plenty of other ways to forge me as I am sure it has you.

Diamonds are only formed through extreme pressure too.

My point is we are all who we are because of our life experiences and these start with our child hood and the culture and environment in which we are raised.

How we are treated and how we are taught through example to treat others can become engrained and we can take them into adult hood.

Understanding people's whole back ground, not just their work history is an essential part of helping leaders recognise and reshape the patterns of behaviour that cause decisions that might be better with a different perspective.

I worked with a CEO last week who was raised in a very strict household where praise and recognition did not exist. Attitudes to difference were strong.

His leadership team were reluctant to open up conversations so I was asked to help.

It helps as I had a similar upbringing and being able to share experiences and how I overcame those challenges makes for a very good and long conversation that required three coffees each!

The Berlin wall came down, some people find it very difficult to bring their own walls down, sometimes we start with a toothpick, sometimes with a hammer, always with empathy and understanding.
